What you are looking at

Nearly all of it stands along six hundred metres of dike. The windmills page names every mill in these frames and gives its date and its trade, and the map page shows which lane each one is on.

One rule travels with the camera, and it is the same one visitor information sets out: most of the timber houses are homes, so photograph them from the path rather than the garden. Nobody minds a photograph of the mills.

Several frames here are not the Zaanse Schans at all. The thatched cottages on green water are Giethoorn, two hours north-east, and the causeway running out to sea is the Afsluitdijk — both stops on the Giethoorn day tours.
